SHARING FOOD

Sharing: verb to divide and serve out in (sometimes) equal portions

SHARING FOOD! A truly selfless act. Something I’ve always been a fan of. I like to think that the very concept of sharing has been almost hard-wired into my DNA due to my dear old dad’s Bedouin roots. From time immemorial the Bedouins have been inviting complete strangers into their tents and homes to share in stories and food!

When I think of my ancestors welcoming thirsty, hungry, travelling tribes into their tents it reminds me of how I am almost compelled to drag everyone who walks through (or even, on occasion, past) my front door into my kitchen, where I immediately start clashing my pots and pans about! I am simply driven to share my cooking, and therefore my food, with others. For instance, if we ever have an unexpected visitor, in spite of my husband, Mark, protesting that I shouldn’t worry, I literally cannot stomach the thought of not feeding them. I’d rather die than not share some kind of a feast! It’s in my blood.

When most people think of sharing, they think of sharing what’s on their plate with others, sharing their dessert (but not too much!) or their bag of chips. But for me sharing is much more than this. You see, if I’m cooking for you or my loved ones I’m effectively sharing time, company, stories, laughter and sometimes (not too often!) even tears. For me, sharing is truly caring.

My idea of heaven would be an ever-expanding dining table around which more and more friends and family sit. I’m never frightened by the number of mouths I need to feed, I’m only ever frightened that I might not have enough for me (there is no worse sin!)

And yet I’ve only recently realized that there is, in fact, a negative side to this sharing obsession of mine! Mark (who is English through and through) often says how wonderfully exotic my style of cooking and dining really is. Having grown up not even eating at a table, he says he adores the way cooking in our house is like staging a mini theatrical performance. But – he admits – there is one small element of this sharing impulse of mine that does slightly get on his nerves. Whenever we eat at home, out at a restaurant or at a friend’s house, he says I just don’t seem to see any boundaries between plates. Apparently my ‘problem’ is that whenever I spot something I like the look of on someone else’s plate, I can’t help but have a nibble, even if the person whose plate it’s on is NOT a sharer! Mark and the girls say it can be very ‘embarrassing’ but I don’t agree! I think it just shows that I am a sharer through and through. Well, we can’t help our genes, can we?

So if, like me, you’re a BIG sharer when it comes to cooking and eating other people’s food, just get all your friends
